The Han River is a river that cuts through the middle of the Korean Peninsula, flowing through Gangwon-do, Chungcheongbuk-do, Gyeonggi-do, and Seoul, and empties into the West Sea. It is the foundation of our lives that has shared joy and sorrow with our people throughout half a millennium of long history, and is the most representative recreation park for Seoul citizens. The Namhan River, the main stream of the Han River, originates from Geomyongso in Changjeok-dong, Taebaek-si, Gangwon-do, and flows northward under the name of Goljicheon near Hajang-myeon, Samcheok-si. After passing Gwangdong Dam, it merges with Imgyecheon originating from Seokbyeongsan and flows westward. At Yeoryang-ri, Bukmyeon, Jeongseon-gun, it meets Songcheon originating from Hwangbyeongsan and becomes Joyang River, continuing to flow before merging with Odaecheon and then flowing southward to become Dongang River. The Han River, which was the center of water transportation, experienced declining water quality as industrialization progressed. However, upon securing the hosting rights for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the necessity for environmental improvement increased, and with water quality improvement and expansion of urban infrastructure, it became a landmark symbolizing Seoul. Today, centered on the Han River, it is equipped with citizen recreation parks, various sports facilities, water ski fields, yacht clubs, boat facilities, and fishing spots, and is being used as entertainment and recreation areas for citizens.
